ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

My name is Meredith Mathews and I tutor in high school and early college-level math with an emphasis on practicality, application to the real world, and visualization. Subjects include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Math SAT prep. I have many years of experience tutoring in these subjects for students ages 14-27. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Tech. I have experience tutoring both in one-on-one lessons and in group tutoring lessons.

I know that learning math is not a one size fits all T-shirt so I spend time before each tutoring session preparing for your specific needs and preferences.

I hated math through most of high school because there was a huge focus on memorization and not on the application or visualization. My turning point was when I took a calculus course with an excellent, dedicated teacher who showed me how the things I was learning in the classroom could apply to real life. My passion is passing on the tremendous favor that the teacher did for me to my students.

Once I realized that I could be excited about math, I worked to get a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. I graduated and became a Biomedical design and manufacturing engineer. During my studies, I tutored classmates in their math classes and in my professional work I mentored new engineers. Engineering is a heavily math-based course of study that builds on all of the essential basics taught from Algebra I through Calculus. My experiences make me uniquely qualified to help students who are looking for a little bit of extra support in math subjects and are passionate about finding a purpose for their studies.
